Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Kigali to Akagera National Park
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport (KGL), our driver guide will greet you and provide a briefing.
We begin with a brief tour of Kigali, a city known for its cleanliness and innovation, before driving 110 km (2.5 hours) east toward the border of Tanzania.
After checking into your lodge, you will embark on a late afternoon boat safari on Lake Ihema. This is a highlight for birdwatchers, offering sightings of the rare Shoebill Stork and African Fish Eagles.
Along the banks, you will observe elephants and buffaloes coming to drink as the sun sets over the water.

Day 2: The Big Five Safari and Scenic Transfer
We start with a 6:30 AM game drive in the northern sector of Akagera. This area is the most productive for predator sightings, including the recently reintroduced lions and black rhinos. You will also encounter zebras, giraffes, and various antelope species.
Following a bush lunch, we begin a cross-country drive toward the northwest. This 4-hour journey takes you through the heart of Rwanda’s terraced hills, eventually reaching the base of the Virunga Volcanoes.
By evening, the climate cools significantly as you arrive at the gateway to the mountain gorillas.

Day 3: The Gorilla Trekking Encounter
The day you have been waiting for. After an early breakfast, we head to the Kinigi Park Headquarters for a 7:00 AM briefing.
You will be assigned to one of the 12 habituated gorilla families. The trek through the bamboo forest can take anywhere from 1 to 5 hours depending on the gorillas’ movement.
Once found, you will spend a strictly regulated 60 minutes with the troop. Observing a silverback’s gentle leadership and the playful antics of the infants is a transformative experience.
In the afternoon, visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village to learn about Rwanda’s pre-colonial history and watch traditional “Intore” dancers.

Day 4: Primates and Farewell
On your final morning, you may choose to track the Golden Monkeys, endemic primates known for their striking orange coats and energetic behavior.
