Tour Overview
The 4 Days Rwanda Gorilla and Wildlife Safari is a compact yet comprehensive circuit that covers two of Rwanda’s most diverse national parks.
By combining the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) with the mountain gorilla, you experience the full spectrum of East African wildlife in under a week.
The tour begins in the vibrant capital of Kigali, transitions to the eastern savannahs of Akagera, and concludes in the northern Virunga Mountains.
Thanks to Rwanda’s excellent infrastructure, the driving distances are short, typically ranging from 2.5 to 4 hours between destinations, allowing for more time in the field and less time in transit.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Kigali to Akagera National Park

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport (KGL), our driver guide will greet you and provide a briefing.
We begin with a brief tour of Kigali, a city known for its cleanliness and innovation, before driving 110 km (2.5 hours) east toward the border of Tanzania.
After checking into your lodge, you will embark on a late afternoon boat safari on Lake Ihema. This is a highlight for birdwatchers, offering sightings of the rare Shoebill Stork and African Fish Eagles.
Along the banks, you will observe elephants and buffaloes coming to drink as the sun sets over the water.
Meal Plan: Lunch and Dinner.
Lodging: Magashi Camp (Luxury), Akagera Game Lodge (Mid-Range).
Day 2: The Big Five Safari and Scenic Transfer
We start with a 6:30 AM game drive in the northern sector of Akagera. This area is the most productive for predator sightings, including the recently reintroduced lions and black rhinos. You will also encounter zebras, giraffes, and various antelope species.
Following a bush lunch, we begin a cross-country drive toward the northwest. This 4-hour journey takes you through the heart of Rwanda’s terraced hills, eventually reaching the base of the Virunga Volcanoes.
By evening, the climate cools significantly as you arrive at the gateway to the mountain gorillas.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
Lodging: Bisate Lodge (Luxury), Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel (Mid-Range).
Day 3: The Gorilla Trekking Encounter
The day you have been waiting for. After an early breakfast, we head to the Kinigi Park Headquarters for a 7:00 AM briefing.
You will be assigned to one of the 12 habituated gorilla families. The trek through the bamboo forest can take anywhere from 1 to 5 hours depending on the gorillas’ movement.

Once found, you will spend a strictly regulated 60 minutes with the troop. Observing a silverback’s gentle leadership and the playful antics of the infants is a transformative experience.
In the afternoon, visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village to learn about Rwanda’s pre-colonial history and watch traditional “Intore” dancers.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
Wildlife: Mountain Gorillas.
Day 4: Primates and Farewell
On your final morning, you may choose to track the Golden Monkeys, endemic primates known for their striking orange coats and energetic behavior.
Alternatively, visit the Dian Fossey Museum in Musanze to understand the legacy of the woman who saved these great apes.

After lunch, we drive back to Kigali (2.5 hours), where your guide will drop you at the airport or your hotel, marking the end of your extraordinary Rwanda safari.
Meal Plan: Breakfast and Lunch.
